Sugar Grove Academy

Sugar Grove Academy (SGA) is part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and designated as a Title I school and a New Education System school. It was transformed from an elementary school to a middle school in 2010. It is located in southwestern part of Houston (District J). In 2022 there were 759 students total in 6th-8th grades. The area is home to many Hispanics and Latinos. Median household income was $60,000 in 2022. There is a high rate of economically-disadvantaged, immigrant, and at-risk students.

Projects

The Foundation began supporting SGA in the school year 2024-2025.

  • STAAR EOC Tutorials and Award Program: To help students improve on state standardized test and supplements the 21st Century After School Program
  • Class HERO: A software program used to support PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports)
  • SEL Journaling for Students: Journals for students to utilize during their study of literature and application of in their social emotional learning journey
  • Metro Q Cards: To provide public transportation for students who have no other way to get to school
  • Hot Box Initiative: To provide hot spots for students who have no internet access at home allowing them to complete school work and assignments
  • Teacher Appreciation Week
  • Student Sports for All: To provide funding source for underprivileged student athletes to cover sporting equipment, HISD insurance fees, nutrition and other costs not covered by HISD
  • Attendance Incentives: To celebrate students who have perfect attendance
  • Fostering Excellence Through Recognition: A teacher and student incentive program
